Media sales jobs 'safer' than City positions

Media sales jobs are being preferred over those in the financial services as they are being seen as "safer", new research shows.

Figures produced by reed.co.uk show 20 per cent of graduates would prefer to go into what they see as a field better protected from the credit crunch such as media sales jobs, Personnel Today reports.

Of those interviewed, four per cent would choose finance, two per cent banking and three per cent accounting.

According to the news provider, the research found one in four are afraid when they start looking for jobs they will be unable to find one.

Head of marketing at the researcher Mark Rhodes tells the source there is an increasing diversity in the positions jobseekers are looking for.

"We are seeing that graduates are shunning the traditional [City] jobs and looking for opportunities in different sectors," he says.

In a recent survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development 46 per cent felt new, Generation Y applicants for positions including media sales jobs were looking for different qualities than traditionally have been demanded.

Younger employees were looking for more flexibility to accommodate family life and other personal commitments.
