IT skills 'necessary for work'

People who attempt to enter the workplace without a basic knowledge of IT may find they experience difficulties, an expert has suggested.

Elspeth Farrar, communications director for Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, pointed out that computers are present in almost all working environments, which may be familiar to those in media and new media jobs.

She added: "You'd be very hard put in any particular job these days where you are not required to have some kind of competency with computers."

The National Employers Skills Survey 2007, published by Leading Learning and Skills last year, suggested more IT awareness is needed in the UK workforce.

According to the research, there has been an increase in the proportion of skill shortage vacancies attributed a lack of computing abilities.

However, it also showed there has been an increase in employers who provide training to their staff, rising from 59 per cent in 2003 to 67 per cent in 2007.
